617 Squadron - The Dambusters - departed from RAF Scampton near Lincoln on 16th May 1943 to destroy three dams - the Eder, the Mohne, and the Sorpe in the Ruhr Valley. Of 19 aircraft eight failed to return. Two of the dams breached and the third damaged using the bouncing bomb
